Who was Eiler Hagerup d.e.?

Eiler Hagerup d.e. was the Bishop of the Diocese of Nidaros from 1731 until his death in 1743. The "d.e." at the end of his name means den eldre to distinguish him from his younger nephew, Eiler Hagerup d.y., a Bishop in the Diocese of Bjørgvin.

Hagerup was born in 1684 in Kvernes, Norway. He served as a parish pastor in Denmark, a chaplain in Kvernes, the leader of the mission to the Sami people, and finally as bishop in Trondheim. He died in 1743 in Trondheim.
