Der gebürtige Karlsruher betrat mit Erfolg die Laufbahn eines Steuerbeamten und arbeitete sich 1879 bis zum «verantwortlichen Verrechner» der Großherzoglichen Vermögensverwaltung empor. 1896 wurde er Vorstand des Hoffinanzamtes.
