Who is Chris Frangou?
Chris Frangou is an award winning bass player, composer and producer based in Melbourne, Australia. He is immersed in a wide range of musical cultures as far spread as as jazz, electronic, hip-hop, Ethio-jazz, funk and rock.
His diverse musical palate and experience has seen him composing and performing live and in the studio around the world for numerous Australian and international artists. His productions have gained extensive airplay in Australia including on Triple J, PBS FM, 3RRR and ABC.
In 2017 he released 'Kaleidoscope', a unique perspective on 21st century jazz that revolves around a core trio of keyboardist Hue Blanes (The Bamboos, Harry James Angus), and long term collaborator and drummer Matt Head. The group’s self titled debut album features special guests Tom Fryer, Ian Dixon and Panagiotis Andreou (Now Vs. Now, New York Gypsy All-Stars).
Chris is also currently playing alongside The Senegambian Jazz Band, Solomon Sisay and Maia & The Big Sky (Kenya) as well as Paul Reid as both bass player and producer.
He is also known for, and has worked alongside, Mulatu Astatke (Ethiopia), Nhatty Man, Black Jesus Experience, Bob Sedergreen, Valanga Khoza, Kafka Pony, Shirin Majd, Bongeziwe Mabandla (South Africa), The JAzmaris, Dereb the Ambassador, and Yared Negu (Ethiopia).
Recent show highlights include Meredith Music Festival (Aus), Glastonbury (UK), Melbourne International Jazz Festival (Aus), Wellington Jazz Festival (NZ), St Kilda Festival (Aus), National Gallery of Victoria (Aus), Strawberry Fields (Aus), Queenscliff Music Festival (Aus), Woodford Folk Festival (Aus), Bushfire Festival (Swaziland), Rainbow Serpent Festival (Aus) and Azgo Festival (Mozambique).
