Who was Keying?
Aisin Gioro Keying, commonly known monomymously as Keying Qiying; Manchu: Kiyeng; Chinese: 耆英; pinyin: Qíyīng; Wade–Giles: Ch'i²-ying¹; Cantonese Yale: Kei4 Ying¹; born 21 March 1787, was a Manchu statesman during the Qing Dynasty who conducted the settlement of the First Opium War with the British and other western powers 1843-47. He was sent to negotiate once again in 1858 to settle the Arrow War, but the settlement was repudiated by the Daoguang emperor and he was forced to commit suicide (29 June 1858). He was well regarded in the Western world and well received in Hong Kong.
