Who is Tamara Kolton?

Tamara Kolton is the first rabbi ordained in Humanistic Judaism. Rabbi Dr. Kolton is currently The Scholar In Residence at Congregation Shir Tikvah in Troy, Michigan.

Rabbi Kolton grew up attending the Birmingham Temple in Farmington Hills, Michigan, and until recently, practiced Humanistic Judaism throughout her life. She was ordained in October 1999 at the International Institute for Secular Humanistic Judaism, having received her PhD in Rabbinic Studies in August 1999; her dissertation was on the role and experience of female rabbis. She became the senior rabbi of the Birmingham temple in 2003 and served the congregation until 2012.

In 2012, Rabbi Kolton created an innovative spiritual program called Soulful Living and became The Scholar In Residence at Congregation Shir Tikvah in Troy, Michigan. She now identifies with the Renewal and Reform Jewish Movements, as well as with great teachings from indigenous and Buddhist traditions. She frequently conducts weddings and funerals and is active in the Detroit community as a spiritual leader and licensed psychologist.

Rabbi Dr. Kolton is working on her first book about the path of spiritual transformation.
