Who is Michael Loebenstein?

Michael Loebenstein is a curator and researcher in the field of audiovisual archiving and visual history.

His career over the past 15 years has included senior positions at the Austrian Film Museum, working as the head of the Education & Outreach department and as Curator for Special Programs.

In 2008 he was appointed to the board of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture’s film funding agency, serving a 3-year term. From 2009 until 2011 he was an elected member of the Executive Committee of the International Federation of Film Archives

Since 2009 he has acted as project manager and researcher at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for History and Society where he has been responsible for directing large-scale historical research projects including film.stadt.wien.

In 2010 he curated the much-lauded exhibition Wien im Film at the Wien Museum in Vienna, a celebration of a century of images capturing the essence of the city.

He is the author and editor of numerous publications, books and articles on film history, curatorship and contemporary film culture. He is a co-founder and editor of the film periodical kolik.film, published since 2004.
