Who is Zemgus Girgensons?

Zemgus Girgensons is a Latvian ice hockey player. He is currently a prospect for the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League, playing for the Rochester Americans in the AHL. Girgensons was selected 14th overall in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the Sabres. With the selection Girgensons became the highest drafted Latvian in NHL history, 16 spots higher than Sandis Ozoliņš in 1991. He is 1.88 m and 90 kg centre.

In 2011 he became USHL champion with Dubuque Fighting Saints, he also participated in All-Star game. In 2011–12 season he was the captain of Fighting Saints.

He participated at the 2012 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships as a member of the Latvia men's national junior ice hockey team and at the 2010 IIHF World U18 Championships.

Girgensons was selected by the HC CSKA Moscow in the 2nd round of the 2011 KHL Junior Draft.

Girgensons had committed to the Vermont Catamounts of the NCAA; however, he signed a professional contract with the Sabres on July 13, 2012, which forfeits his NCAA eligibility.
