Who was Augusta Holtz?

Augusta Louise Holtz was the world's oldest person from the 13 October 1983 death of Emma Wilson to her own death at age 115 years 79 days just over three years later. She was the first verified person to reach age 115 and was the world's oldest verified person ever at the time of her death.

She was born in the East Prussian Province of Posen of the German Empire in 1871 to Michael Hoppe and Wilhemina Henrietta Hoppe. She moved to the U.S. at age 2 in 1873. Her father owned a farm near Troy, Illinois. She grew up with three siblings. She married Edward Holtz, who died in 1922 at the age of 48 or 49. She had four children with him—two sons and two daughters. She later moved to St. Louis County, Missouri, where she died at the St. Sophia Geriatric Center in Florissant. Her record as the oldest American ever was surpassed by Lucy Hannah in 1990, but Holtz remains the oldest German-born person ever to this day.
