Who is Alain Blum?

Alain Blum was born on February 18, 1959 in Strasbourg. From an early age he was attracted to liturgical chant. His paternal grandfather David Blum was already practicing as Baal Tefila in Wissembourg, and his maternal grandfather, Fernand Levy, was a Hazan at Phalsbourg.

Alain Blum learned Hazanut in a self-taught way, as well as with the help of the late Hazan Oscar Kugler and Michel Heymann.

He entered the Haguenau Synagogue Choir where he practiced as a soloist for many years. In 1978 he was employed as a hazan of Brumath until 1980, then as hazan of Haguenau from 1981 to 1982. In 1982 he moved to Israel, and in 1987 he was called to Lausanne, Switzerland, where he practiced until 2005.

He then moved to Israel with his wife and children and worked as a journalist for French-speaking news sites.

Since 2022, he has returned to work for the Jewish community of Lausanne as a hazan and divides his time between Israel and Switzerland.
