Alexander Mackay was a New Zealand farmer, explorer, linguist, magistrate and land court judge. He was born in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland on 11 May 1833. He married Hannah Sarah Gibbs at Collingwood, a daughter of William Gibbs.
