Who is Cool DJ Jimmy Jatt?

Cool DJ Jimmy Jatt is Africa’s foremost DJ of repute and Master Spinner per excellence who has graced many great stages with his notable skills and unique style. Formerly known as Master J, he has been in the music and entertainment industry with a career spanning over two decades. He was born and brought up in the Obalende area of Lagos Island in Nigeria, to a family of five; him, his three brothers and a sister. Young Jimmy found his love for music early in life and was exposed to the likes of Nat King Cole, King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey, Bonny M, and Abba, while getting his 80’s groove from his brothers. His influences were musicians like Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Bob Nestor Marley, musicians who mixed music with poetry. He was going to be a lawyer but the passion for music saw him recording demos as a rap artiste, doing rap and mimes. Then rap wasn’t widely accepted and this factored to the impossibility of getting a record deal. Undeterred, his love for music geared him towards a career as a Disc Jockey.

Back in the days being a DJ wasn’t considered a profession but Cool DJ Jimmy Jatt had a vision and focus. In the 80s he worked with his brothers as an apprentice, learning the ropes and intricacies of the business. Cutting his teeth in mixing, mastering and spinning. Gaining wide acceptance and breaking into mainstream was no cake walk, Cool DJ Jimmy Jatt started his own self sponsored street party in Obalende called Road Blocks and lots of university campus tours, which were phenomenal success and gained him street credibility and a reputation as a master spinner with a Midas touch. Not wanting to narrow his skills to radio or resident club DJ, Cool DJ Jimmy Jatt had his sights set on the big picture, to be a DJ with a difference. He is the first DJ to have a TV show and party tagged Jimmy’s Jump Off which is aired both locally and internationally, and also the first DJ to record an album. Definition which contains 21 songs, a couple of singles and featured an array of 50 stars amongst whom are, Tuface Idibia, Mode Nine and Elajoe. The song Stylee went on to be nominated and won several Channel O music video awards while staying on the MTV Africa countdown for weeks. Cool DJ Jimmy Jatt has been instrumental to the successful careers of virtually most hip hop and rap artiste in Nigeria with stars like P.square, Wiz Kid, Tuface Idibia and a host of others. He is like a tree with many branches as he has helped groom, train and mentor a host of Disc Jockeys who were drawn by the monumental success he had achieved by putting a face to the DJ profession. DJ Waxxy of Channel O South Africa, DJ Tony Blaise, DJ Funky and Mix Master Tee are some of his protégé. With the passing of time and by recognition he has been known with various aliases, Cool DJ Jimmy Jatt, DJJJ; DTriple J, Premium DJ and Master J. As a crowd pleaser, Cool DJ Jimmy Jatt has the ability to move a crowd like to other with his mixing and spinning skills, gathering a large fan base. He has won many awards the first was African DJ Championship in 1989 and the most recent award was in 2012.

Known for his signature look, a face cap and fashion glasses, Cool DJ Jimmy Jatt ventured into fashion producing his own D-Tripple J caps which is also a colossal success, it is found in stores both locally and internationally. His success has seen him being decorated as a Celebrity Special Marshall by the FRSC, a Peace Ambassador by the United Nations, and an Honorary Member of the Lion/Lioness Club. He is also a member of Core DJs and Naija DJs. He is known to support lots of charities by lending his skills free of charge.

Cool DJ Jimmy Jatt, born James Amu on October 15th, coined the name Jatt from the combination of the first letter of his name and his brothers. He has played on many great stages both locally and internationally. He is married with two daughters, passionate about his profession and would loved to be remembered as the guy who came and did his part.
