Who is Fridrik Olafsson?
Fridrik Olafsson [Friðrik Ólafsson] (born 26 January 1935) is an Icelandic chess grandmaster. He was president of the international chess governing body, FIDE, from 1978 to 1982. He is a former Icelandic Champion and former Nordic Champion. At his peak he was one of the strongest players in the Western world, and he played in the the 1959 World Championship Candidates' Tournament. In addition to being a chess grandmaster, Ólafsson is a qualified lawyer, and he has also been involved with politics in his native Iceland.
