George Martin

Who was George Martin?

George Martin was an English cricketer who played for the Kent County Cricket Club. He was born in Penshurst and died in Leigh.

Martin made his cricketing debut for the All England XI in 1852 at the age of just 18, alongside such future teammates as George Parr. It would be four more seasons until Martin's first-class debut, in August 1856, against Surrey.

Martin would play regularly in 1858 and 1860, though his average remained low, scoring just 63 runs in 7 innings.

1861 saw just a single first-class game for Martin, and although he made his first-class best score of 24 against Cambridgeshire, and took two catches, this was not enough to save his team from defeat.

The following season, 1862, saw four first-class games, and while the early part of the season was spent in the lower order, Martin was moved up to the upper order, with mixed results.

Martin's final season with the team was 1863, in which he played a single game.
