이학주는 현재 미국 메이저 리그 탬파베이 레이스 산하 트리플 A 팀인 더럼 불스의 유격수이다. 115만 달러의 계약금을 받고 시카고 컵스에 입단했으며, 2011년 탬파베이 레이스에 트레이드되었다. 2012년 시즌 후 메이저 리그 40인 로스터에 포함되었으나, 2013년 4월 트리플 A 경기 도중 갑작스러운 무릎 부상을 당해 시즌을 마감했다.
