Who is Ian Campbell?

Ian Bernard Campbell is a retired long and triple jumper from Australia, who represented his native country at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, USSR. There he ended up in fifth place in the men's triple jump event, with a leap of 16.72 metres. In the final, Campbell, missed a certain gold medal after his fourth jump was fouled, this decision has been disputed since. He was accused of dragging his trail leg during the second, or “step” portion of the event. He had several jumps over 17.37 metres and at least one estimated to be more than 17.60 metres, but after each of those jumps, and sometimes with a few seconds' hesitation, a judge's red flag indicated a foul. He won the silver medal at the 1978 Commonwealth Games.
