Who is Jim Shook?

Jim Shook has a broad career in industrial design including automotive design for General Motors, mass transit design for Bombardier, industrial and consumer products for FMC, and technology products for Tandem Computers (now HP). He and his design teams have received 35 international design awards including IDEA gold, Hannover Fair Gute Industrieform Gold, and the Japanese best foreign product design award. As the founder and principle of Shook Design (a full service Industrial Design Firm established in 1998) his group has designed and prototyped many transportation and consumer products. For the San Francisco Bay Area his most significant contribution is the design of the Cal Train (Baby Bullet) and Altimont Commuter Express (ACE) train as well as the San Jose Light Rail Vehicles. He has been teaching since 1981 at a variety of Bay Area institutions including Stanford University, San Jose State University, and the Academy of Art University. He has been a Vice President and National Board member of the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA). As an entrepreneur he has founded Zebra Motors (an electric car company) and has produced and marketed his own products. Currently Jim teaches our Foundation drawing course (DSID 22) and also teaches Advanced Industrial Design (DSID 125).
