Who is Kakaji Maharaj?

Kakaji Maharaj was an Indian philosopher and thinker. He was associated with Swaminarayan sect and followed the interpretation of Swaminarayan's teachings known as Akshar Purushottam Upasana He received enlightenment in 1952 from Yogiji Maharaj. Kakaji Maharaj is claimed to be by his followers was one of the spiritual successors of Yogiji Maharaj, the fourth spiritual successor of the BAPS sect of Swaminarayan Hinduism. Furthermore, this successorship is not recognized by the Swaminarayan Sampraday. On May 28, 1966, Kakaji and his brother were excommunicated from BAPS due to the issue of initiation of women as saints. He would go on to create a separate institution mirroring Shastriji Maharaj's creation of BAPS from the Swaminarayan Sampraday after he was also excommunicated. This sect is known as the Gunatit Samaj. The Government of India issued a commemorative postage stamp on Kakaji Maharaj in 2003.
