Who is Maria Aldridge?

Maria Bernadette Aldridge is an English student nurse who disappeared between 21-24 May 1968, when aged 17, in Dudley, England.

On 28 February 1968, Aldridge made her final contact with her family; a letter to her mother. The content of the letter was newsy, happy and expressed an intention to visit in the forthcoming days. Hospital records show that Aldridge continued to study at the hospital until at least May 1968.

On an unspecified date in May 1968 a John or Paul Gough, who was believed to be Aldridge's boyfriend, travelled to visit her mother, to inform her that Aldridge was missing.

Aldridge's mother and sister travelled to the student nurses lodgings, to look for her. They were greeted by the Matron, who handed them Aldridge's belongings, terming her a runaway. Aldridge had taken nothing with her and had not collected her pay check. No one had reported her missing and no one had searched for her.

On 1 June 1968 a mysterious and possibly related advertisement appeared in the Birmingham Evening Mail: "NURSE M – Meet 7p.m. 63 bus, Monday, June 3rd. Hope to see you, Simon."

Despite a police investigation and search of the surrounding area, no trace of Aldridge was found, and the reason for her disappearance remains unknown.

The police investigation was reopened in 2009. Aldridge's sister, Cathy Phillips, who now lives in Canada, continues to search for her sister.
