Who was P. Shanmugam?

P. Shanmugham was the Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Puducherry. He served from March 22, 2000 to October 27, 2001.

Being in politics since 1950, he has played many commanding roles - as the Leader of the Opposition, Representing Pondicherry in the Lok Sabha for 3 consecutive terms from 1980, as the Pondy Pradesh Congress Committee for about 33 years and the Chief Minister of Pondicherry. He was considered the most able administrator and decisive decision maker. He has embarked significant developments - he worked hard to establish Pondy University, he played a key role in establishing the Karaikal Port and many infrastructural projects, increasing government revenue to name a few. Throughout his political career spanning over 6 decades, he led a very simple bachelor life.

This towering personality, known & respected by all ceased life a few days before his 86th birthday. As a bachelor, he lived & breathed for the welfare of the common people. After his demise, his life savings is a grand contribution to the needy & poor people. He will continue to live in the hearts of many through his philanthropic contribution to the underprivileged.
