Who was Princess Margarita of Greece and Denmark?

Princess Margarita of Greece and Denmark (Greek: Πριγκίπισσα Μαργαρίτα της Ελλάδας και Δανίας) (18 April 1905 – 24 April 1981) was the eldest child and daughter of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg. She was born on the island of Corfu in Greece. She was the first great great grandchild of Queen Victoria.

Through her father, she was a grandchild of George I of Greece and Olga Konstantinova of Russia, a granddaughter of Emperor Nicholas I of Russia. Through her mother she was a great-great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Her mother was a granddaughter of The Princess Alice, second daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Margarita was the first great-great-grandchild of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

Margarita was the sister of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, originally Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, the husband and consort of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. She also had three sisters: Theodora, Margravine of Baden; Cecilie, Hereditary Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine; and Sophie, Princess George of Hanover.

Margarita married Gottfried, Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg on 20 April 1931 in Langenburg, Germany. Gottfried was the eldest son of Ernst II, Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg and his wife Princess Alexandra of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, a male line granddaughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert through their second son Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and his wife Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna of Russia, a daughter of Alexander II of Russia and Princess Marie of Hesse and by Rhine. As such, both Princess Margarita and Prince Gottfried had common ancestors in Queen Victoria and Nicholas I of Russia. In descent from Queen Victoria, Prince Gottfried was a second cousin of Princess Margarita's mother. In descent from Nicholas I, they were third cousins.
