Who is Srinivasa 'Hal' Iyengar?

Dr. Srinivasa Iyengar is an Indian American civil engineer and a senior structural consultant, who has been particularly instrumental in the development of innovative and efficient structural concepts and systems for high-rise, long-span and stadium structures. He along with engineering legend Fazlur Khan ushered in the widespread usage of modern computers and software as a valuable tool for structural engineering. Iyengar said, "It is imperative for engineers to evolve with today's new technology and be able to reinvent themselves through the powerful process of computer visialization." He has been involved in many notable projects such as John Hancock Center, Sears Tower, Anaheim Stadium expansion, Soldier Field renovation, McCormick Exposition Center/Chicago, Convention Center in Hong Kong, Broadgate Phase 11, Hotel Artes in Barcelona, Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, and Millennium Park in Chicago. He was the director of Structural Engineering at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill from 1975 to 1992. He received numerous awards including the Fazlur Khan lifetime achievement medal.

Iyengar was born into a prominent civil engineering family in Mysore India in on May 6, 1934. He developed a deep enthusiasm for civil engineering at early life and he quickly got a job at SOM. He is now a retired engineer from SOM and enjoys hiking and tennis with his daughter.
