Who is Walid Abdallah?
Dr. Walid Abdallah is an Egyptian scholar, translator, poet, and assistant professor of English language and literature at Suez University, Egypt. He holds a PhD in English language and comparative literature, with a specialization in the comparison of modern Arabic and Western literatures. He has over 15 years of teaching experience and has made significant contributions to bridging Eastern and Western literary traditions through his work as a researcher, translator, and educator.
Dr. Walid was born on September 24, 1980, in Egypt. He is a native Arabic speaker and is fluent in both English and French. His academic journey began at Benha University, where he earned a BA in English language and literature in 2001, followed by a master’s degree in English language and literature in 2006. He later completed his PhD in 2015 with first-class honors.
Throughout his career, Dr. Walid has taught English grammar, comparative literature, and composition at various institutions. His teaching experience extends internationally, having participated in the International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP) sponsored by IREX in the USA in 2014. During this time, he gained field experience at both the College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York, and Bethlehem Central High School, where he taught Arabic literature and English as a second language (TESOL). His passion for education is reflected in his dedication to helping students appreciate both English and Arabic languages and their cultural significance.
As a prolific writer and translator, Dr. Walid has published multiple books and research papers. His notable works include Escape to the Realm of Imagination, which compares the writings of Tawfiq Al-Hakim with those of Jack London. He has also co-authored a book with American poet Andy Fogle titled Arc and Seam (2022), which features 19 translated poems by the renowned Egyptian poet Farouk Goweda. Dr. Walid ’s translation work has been published in esteemed literary journals such as RHINO Poetry, The Reunion: The Dallas Review, Image Journal, and The Los Angeles Review.
In addition to his translation efforts, Dr. Walid has authored six other books on English and Eastern literatures, including Man Domination and Woman Emancipation in the Selected Novels of Alice Walker (2011), Shout of Silence (2015), Go Ye Moon (2018), My Heart Still Beats (2020), and The Egyptian Lane: In Naguib Mahfouz’s Trilogy (2021). His poetry chapbooks, My Heart Oasis and Fae Dreams, further showcase his literary talent.
Dr. Walid ’s research interests include comparative literature, the sociological study of literature, diaspora and hybridity, and the works of both Arab and Western writers. His academic contributions include numerous research papers on topics such as Ahdaf Soueif’s Aisha, Monica Ali’s Brick Lane, and Naguib Mahfouz’s Trilogy, as well as studies on prominent figures like Azar Nafisi, Mohja Kahf, and Nawal Al Saadawi.
Throughout his career, Dr. Walid has actively participated in international conferences and presented research on a wide range of topics. He has been a guest speaker at events such as the CDELT International Conference at Ain Shams University, the NeMLA International Conference in the USA, and the 15th International Congress on Language, Literature, and Cultural Research in Istanbul, Turkey.
Dr. Walid is committed to furthering his mission of translating Arabic masterpieces into English to help Western readers better understand Arab culture and literature. His work aims to bridge cultural gaps and promote a deeper appreciation of both Eastern and Western literary traditions. He is also keen on highlighting the works of Arab and Muslim female writers who have immigrated to the West, exploring themes of self-discovery and identity.
