Who was Alfred Belpaire?

Alfred Jules Belpaire was a Belgian locomotive engineer who invented the square-topped Belpaire firebox in 1860.

Belpaire was born in Ostend, and was educated at the École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures in Paris, France.

He died in Schaarbeek, aged 72.
