Who was Alfred Klee?

In November 1935, the Jewish community in Amsterdam (Dutch-Jewish Main Synagogue) celebrated its 300th anniversary. In his role as chairman of the Jewish community in Berlin, Alfred Klee attended the celebrations. Shortly afterwards, he arrived as a refugee from Berlin in Amsterdam.

Alfred Klee was one of the "Opponenten" of Abraham Adolf Neufelds dissertation, on 15th August 1903.

Neufeld was the first man to suggest the production of a Zionist propaganda film.

In 1899 Alfred Klee married Therese Stargardt. They had three children, among whom Ruth Judith. After the Kristallnacht on 9 November 1938 Alfred Klee decided to emigrate. During the raid of 20 June 1943 in Amsterdam he was arrested with his family. In Westerbork he died of an heart attack.

Dr. Alfred Klee was a Berlin-based lawyer and a leading Zionist. A brief synopsis of his activities can be found in: S. Rawidowicz, (edited by B. Ravid), Israel: The Ever-Dying People, and Other Essays. (Rutherford, Fairleigh Dickinson University 1986.)

Alfred Klee died in Westerbork. He was reburied after the war in the Jewish cemetery in Muiderberg.
