Who was Alonso Manrique de Lara?
Alfonso or Alonso Manrique de Lara y Solís, Bishop of Badajoz, was a Spanish churchman. He was Bishop of Cordoba, and Archbishop of Seville. He was Inquisitor general as a successor of Adrian of Utrecht, and appointed around February - April 1531 as cardinal-priest of the Santi Apostoli, Rome. After he was given the title of cardinal-priest of San Callisto, from 17 April 1531 till 12 July 1532. Died on September 28, 1538, Seville, of a fall from a horse.
Manrique was born in Segura de León in Badajoz, apparently a son from the third marriage of the famous Rodrigo Manrique with a Solís-Castañeda woman, being therefore a very young stepbrother of the poet Jorge Manrique de Lara,. Jerónimo Manrique de Lara was his son.
He died in Seville.
