Who is Ariranga Pillay?

Ariranga Govindasamy Pillay was the Chief Justice of Mauritius until 2007, when he was succeeded by Y. K. J. Yeung Sik Yuen.

He was called to the Bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1972 and is the Chairman of the Judicial and Legal Service Commission of Mauritius. In November 2001, he was elected as an Honorary Bencher of Lincoln's Inn, London. He has held numerous appointments among others Principal Crown Counsel, Assistant Solicitor General and Parliamentary Counsel at the Attorney General's office and Ministry of Justice.

Chief Justice Pillay was appointed Puisne Judge and later, Acting Senior Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court of Mauritius from 1987 – 1996. He is also a member of the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights as well as the appointed Adviser to the Governing Council of the African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies.
