Who was Arthur Seyss-Inquart?

Arthur Seyss-Inquart was an Austrian Nazi politician who served as Chancellor of Austria for two days – from March 11 until March 13, 1938 – before the Anschluss annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany, signing the constitutional law as acting head of state upon the resignation of President Wilhelm Miklas.

During World War II, he served the Third Reich in the General Government of occupied Poland and as Reichskommissar in the Netherlands. At the Nuremberg Trials, he was found guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death.

Famous Quotes:

  • 'I hope that this execution is the last act of the tragedy of the Second World War and that the lesson taken from this world war will be that peace and understanding should exist between peoples. I believe in Germany.'
  • 'Death by hanging...well, in view of the whole situation, I never expected anything different. It's all right. '
