Who is August Witkowski?

August Wiktor Witkowski was a Polish physicist, rector of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow.

Member of the Academy of Learning. He is credited with founding the first modern physics department in Poland.

One of the buildings of the Jagiellonian University, the Collegium Witkowskiego, is named after him. He is a patron of two high schools in Poland.

His research was into experimental physics, in particular, electrical conduction in gases and electromagnetic radiation.

He is buried at the Rakowicki Cemetery.
