Who was Bahne Rabe?

Bahne Rabe was a competition rower and Olympic champion for West Germany.

Rabe won a gold medal in coxed eights at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, as a member of the rowing team from West Germany. He received a bronze medal in 1992. He was part of a rowing team that set a world record in 1991.

Having ended his career in 1995, Rabe continued his strict exercise regimen while not taking in enough calories. As a result, he quickly lost weight. He died of pneumonia on 5 August, 2001, after having been admitted to hospital in critical condition due to his extreme malnutrition.
