Mena graduated with a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico; specialized in Fluid Mechanics at the University of Toulouse; and earned both a master's degree and a Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering from Brown University, where he also received the Brown Engineering Alumni Medal in 2000.
