Who was Birendra Shah?

Birendra Shah was a Nepalese journalist. He was kidnapped and killed in late 2007 by cadres of the Communist Party of Nepal. The CPN later issued a statement confirming his death. His death drew criticism from several press freedom organizations, including Reporters without borders, the Committee to Protect Journalists, and the International Federation of Journalists.

More than a month after the killing, Maoist Deputy Commander Janardan Sharma Prabhakar apologized on behalf of his party, which had previously claimed innocence.
