Who is Churchill Alemao?

Churchill Braz Alemao is a former MP of the 14th Lok Sabha of India. He represented the Navelim constituency in the Legislative Assembly of Goa but lost to Avertano Furtado in the 2012 elections.

In the 1980s Churchill was allegedly involved in smuggling gold; in 1992 his brother Alvernaz Alemao was caught with a cargo of gold and was killed after a struggle with Costao Fernandes, a customs officer. The Alemao family's hold in the region was so powerful that when the customs officer went to the Colva Police Station to seek protection, they refused to do so.

Churchill was Chief Minister of Goa for a brief period in the early 1990s, and later became an MP representing the South Goa from 1996 to 1998.
