Who was Frances W. Preston?
Frances Preston served as President and CEO of BMI from 1986 to 2004,
during which time the company's revenue grew more than three times to
over $650 million. She is currently a consultant to BMI, serving on
that organization’s Board of Directors. A Fortune magazine profile of
the music industry called her “one of the true powerhouses of the pop
music business.” She is a well-known figure on Capitol Hill, frequently
testifying in support of creators’ rights, and has made BMI a key
member of the wide-ranging alliance debating the public policy issues
of the digital age. Ms. Preston joined BMI in 1958 after working in the
music and broadcasting industries in Nashville.
Among her numerous achievements and honors:
1988 recipient of American Women in Radio and Television’s Outstanding Achievement Award;1993 induction into the Broadcasting Cable Hall of Fame;1998 recipient of American Women in Radio and Television’s President’s Award;1988 recipient of American Women in Radio and Television’s Outstanding Achievement Award;recipient of the NARAS Heroes Award from New York Chapter of Recording Academy;2003 recipient of the Touchstone Advocate Award from Women in Music;2003 Chairperson of leading international technical alliance of
authors; rights societies (FastTrack); and 2004 induction WITH
Broadcasters’ Foundation Golden Mike Award;
Ms. Preston serves on the Recording Academy’s President’s Advisory
Council and on the board of directors for the Grammy Foundation. She is
a member of the Board of Directors of the National Academy of Popular
Music/Songwriters Hall of Fame, a Board Member of the Rhythm
Blues Foundation, the Rock Roll Hall of Fame, the National Music
Museum (DC) and a past member of the National Advisory Board of the
