Frederick Brian Pickering

Who is Frederick Brian Pickering?

Professor Frederick Brian Pickering is an English metallurgist. His research and development activities contributed significantly to the creation of the stronger and lighter steels.

His notable research and development throughout the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s laid the foundations for much of the physical metallurgy of high strength, low alloy steels. His Physical Metallurgy and the Design of Steels, continues to be recommended reading for the majority of metallurgical engineering and materials science university courses.

Pickering worked at the British Steel Corporation in Rotherham and Sheffield, becoming a key member of the BSC Swinden Laboratories staff and, later, a professor at the Sheffield City Polytechnic.

Prof. Pickering was awarded the 1994 Bessemer Gold Medal for outstanding services to the steel industry, by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.

He was born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England.
