Who is Hassan Abbas?

Hassan Abbas is a scholar and writer in South Asian and Middle Eastern issues, and is based in the United States. His writings focusing on police issues, especially relating to governance, law enforcement and security issues are routinely referenced by academic policy and related publications worldwide. Before his academic career started in the United States, he served the Pakistani government in the security sector during president Musharraf's government and also in the administration of Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

Since 2011, he is working as Professor; lecturing in International Security Affairs. He is also the Chair of the department of Regional and Analytical Studies at the National Defence University in Washington DC. He also served as Director of South and Central Asia Program at NDU. Before his job at National Defence University, he was Quaid-i-Azam Chair Professor at South Asia Institute and School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University in New York. Abbas remained a Visiting Scholar at Harvard Law School's Negotiation Project, plus at the Islamic Legal Studies Program and later was selected as Research Fellow at the Belfer Centre for Science and International affairs at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. During 2009-2011, he was a senior advisor at the Belfer Centre. In 2009, Abbas was selected for the coveted Bernard Schwartz fellowship at Asia Society New York. He is now a Senior Advisor with the organisation.
