Ian Cooper
Australian Rules Footballer
1946 –
Who is Ian Cooper?
Ian Cooper is a former Australian rules footballer who played for St Kilda in the Victorian Football League during the 1960s. In a restrospective poll by a team of experts, Cooper was voted best afield in the 1966 VFL Grand Final, which St Kilda won. It was their sole VFL/AFL premiership by a margin of one point over Collingwood.
Cooper's gangly frame belied his abilities in the tough world of top level footy. He was a good reader of the play, a spectacular mark and accurate kick for goal. His VFL career was cut short by rheumatic fever, although he did have a successful stint with VFA club, Sandringham Zebras, later on in the 1970s, as a leading 100+ goal full forward.
His older brother, Graham Cooper, played for Hawthorn Hawks in the early 60s, appearing in that club's first premiership team.
