Who is Ian van der Wal?

Ian van der Wal was an Australian sprint-middle distance freestyle swimmer, who represented Australia at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. He was a member of the 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle relay teams. He trained at the Commercial Swimming Club in Brisbane.

In 1997, he competed at the 1997 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Fukuoka, where he combined with Michael Klim, Grant Hackett and Ian Thorpe to earn a silver medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay. He was an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder from 1989 to 1992.
