Who is Ignatius Isaac Azar?
Ignatius Isaac Azar was the Syriac Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch during 1709–1722. He was an Assyrian, born in Mosul, and was made a monk and priest at the monastery of St. Mathew or Dayro D'Mor Mattai. Later he became the bishop of this monastery, and was elevated as the Maphrian in 1687. In 1709 he became the Patriarch of Antioch. In 1722 he resigned his post as the patriarch due to his old age.
