Who is Jocelyn Devas?

Jocelyn Devas was the founder of the Devas Club in 1884, a charitable club for young working men in Battersea, south London, England, originally in a room over a coffee shop in Stewarts Road.

Devas was a student at University College, Oxford, matriculating in 1878. The Devas Club was originally called University College House and the Devas Club has maintained its links with the college over the years.

Devas was killed in 1886 in a climbing accident while trying to ascend the Matterhorn in France. His father continued supporting the club after his death and there are still family links today.
