Who is John R. Hetling?

John R. Hetling is an Associate Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago in the departments of Bioengineering and Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. He is also the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Department of Bioengineering and the Director of the Laboratory of Neurotronic Communication at UIC. He is a world leader and expert on neural prosthesis of the neural retina and testing electrical stimulation devices in the retina. His research group has pioneered the use of intraretinal electroretinography as a means of directly testing the physiology of the neural retina. His specific research interests focus on the extraction of information from complex or inaccessible biological systems, specifically as it relates to phototransduction in living animals, and large pattern-generating neural networks.
