Who is Joran van der Sloot?

Joran Andreas Petrus van der Sloot is a Dutch citizen and convicted murderer. He pleaded guilty in Peru to the murder and robbery of Stephany Tatiana Flores Ramírez, who was killed in Lima on May 30, 2010.

After Flores' murder, Van der Sloot fled to Chile, where he was arrested and deported to Peru. On June 7, 2010, he confessed to bludgeoning Flores. He later tried to formally retract his confession, claiming that he had been intimidated by the National Police of Peru and framed by the FBI. A Peruvian judge ruled on June 25, 2010 that the confession was valid.

On January 13, 2012, Van der Sloot was sentenced to 28 years imprisonment for Flores' murder.

Five years earlier, while living in Aruba, Van der Sloot had been the primary suspect in the disappearance of American teenager Natalee Holloway, who disappeared in Aruba on May 30, 2005, exactly five years before Flores' murder. Van der Sloot was indicted by a federal grand jury in the United States for wire fraud and extortion related to Holloway's whereabouts. Holloway's disappearance remains unsolved.
