Maurie Fields
Actor, TV Actor
1925 – 1995
Who was Maurie Fields?
Maurie Fields was an Australian actor, vaudeville performer and stand-up comedian. He became a well-known face on television thanks to his dramatic roles in Bellbird, The Box, Prisoner and The Flying Doctors. He was also a regular in situation comedy series Bobby Dazzler and did regular comedy segments on Hey Hey It's Saturday. Maurie was a regular vistor to a small Hotel in inner Melbourne in his later years and gave proof he was never 'off the stage': regaling the people with stories and jokes. He was a joy to watch. I know because I got to employ him professionally and got invited to join him. His personal charm and engagement were unmistakable. As an advertising executive I wrote and produced a series of national radio campaigns with Maurie as the 'conversational'presenter. They were an unconditional success in 1994, but that was Maurie, not me, in the year before his death. I was greatly saddened by his death but 'heard' it was at his home in his wife's arms on the kitchen floor. That is so much a homeplace of warmth which is appropiate to the man's life.
