Who was Meredith Frampton?

Meredith Frampton was a British painter and etcher, successful as a portraitist in the 1920s.

Frampton was educated at St John's Wood Art School and then at the Royal Academy Schools. He was the son of the sculptor George Frampton and his wife, the painter Christabel Cockerell. Although his artistic career was short and his output was limited, his work is on display at the National Portrait Gallery, Tate Gallery and Imperial War Museum. He was made an R.A. in 1942.

A suspected forgery of a famous Frampton portrait was almost sold through Bonham's in 2008. Frampton's portrait of Winifred Radford was used for a Vintage cover of W. Somerset Maugham's novel The Painted Veil.

Tamara de Lempicka is a comparable painter, but with more of a bias towards the world of fashion.
