Who is Michael Rabinowitz?

Michael Rabinowitz is a bassoonist who plays both classical music and jazz. Born in Bethany, Connecticut, Michael grew up with four sisters and a brother. Surrounded by a family of artists, he was encouraged to pursue interests in music and other fine arts. He attended SUNY at Purchase where he refined his skills and developed a strong interest in jazz that would eventually shape his musical style. Today he lives in Fair Lawn, New Jersey with his wife Meryl and two daughters, Gabrielle and Nica. Michael is most famous for his bringing bassoon into the jazz genre. He has recorded with several jazz greats such as Ira Sullivan, Red Rodney, Wynton Marsalis, John Hicks, Dave Douglas, and Joe Lovano. Michael can also be heard with the Mingus Orchestra. His recordings include: Michael Rabinowitz is currently the head of the band "Bassoon in the Wild." The Bassoon in the Wild quartet featuring Michael Rabinowitz (bassoon), Grisha Alexiev (drums), Diana Herold (Vibraphone) and Joe Fonda (bass) has performed at the JVC Jazz Festival in NYC, The Frick Museum in Pittsburgh, The Mohonk Mountain House Jazz Weekend and other clubs and venues for the last several years.
