Who was Padre João Piscásio Cosmander?
Flemish Jesuit and military engineer with an important role in the fortification of the coast and borders of Portugal. Born in Leuven, was shipwrecked off Portugal in May 1642 while en route for the far east. He then remained in Portugal and supervised the construction of a number of forts along the Spanish border.
