Who is Qin Song?

Qin Song, style name Wenbiao, was an official serving under the warlord Sun Quan in the late Eastern Han Dynasty. He previously served under Sun Ce, Sun Quan's elder brother and predecessor.

Qin Song was from Guangling commandery. Sometime around the late 190s, Qin Song, along with Zhang Zhao, Zhang Hong and Chen Duan, came to serve the warlord Sun Ce, who was on a series of conquests in the Jiangdong region. Qin Song became an advisor to Sun Ce.

Qin Song continued serving under Sun Quan after Sun Ce's death in 200 CE. Around 208, when the warlord Cao Cao was preparing to invade Jiangdong, Sun Quan called for a meeting with all his subjects to discuss how to deal with Cao Cao. Qin Song, Zhang Zhao and many others suggested to Sun Quan to surrender to Cao Cao on the grounds that they could not compete with Cao in terms of military might. Sun Quan did not want to submit to Cao Cao, and he hardened his decision to go to war with Cao after being persuaded by Lu Su and Zhou Yu. He told Zhou Yu that he was very disappointed with Zhang Zhao and Qin Song because he felt that they were actually more concerned about their families and personal interests when they urged him to surrender to Cao Cao.
