Who is R. Sivabhogam?
R Sivabhogam was the first woman accountant in India.
Born on 23 July 1906 she graduated from the Queen Mary's College Chennai. She participated in non cooperation movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi and was imprisoned for a year.
After her release she registered for accountancy course and became first woman accountant of India in 1933. She underwent articleship under Mr C S Sastri.
She started her independent practice in 1937 . She went on to become Chairperson of Southern India Regional Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India for three consecutive terms from 1955 to 1958 . She was also a senate member of the University of Madras.
She was a believer in Gandhian principles and wore Khadi till her death in June 1966.
