Who is Richard Inwood?

Richard Neil Inwood is the Acting Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham and a retired Bishop suffragan of Bedford.

Inwood was born in Burton-on-Trent and studied chemistry at University College, Oxford and theology at Nottingham University. Before ordination, Bishop Inwood spent a year teaching in north-west Uganda and worked as a research and development chemist with ICI in Manchester for nearly two years. He served in Sheffield, London, Bath and Yeovil, before his appointment in 1995 as Archdeacon of Halifax. He was consecrated a bishop by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd Rowan Williams, at Southwark Cathedral on 7 March 2003.

Since 9 April 2014 he has been Acting Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham at the request of the Archbishop of York, a position he will hold for up to 12 months pending the election of the new diocesan bishop. As acting bishop, Inwood attracted media attention in June 2014 for revoking permission to officiate in his diocese from a priest who had married in defiance of an edict from the church's bishops.

He is the co-author of Moved by Steam: Beside the tracks and on the trains 1962-67 with Mike Smith. His wife, Liz is a maths teacher and examiner.
