Sackville Lane-Fox, 12th Baron Conyers
Deceased Person
1827 – 1888
Who was Sackville Lane-Fox, 12th Baron Conyers?
Sackville George Lane-Fox, 12th Baron Conyers and de jure 15th Baron Darcy de Knayth was a British peer and soldier.
Lane-Fox was the eldest son of Sackville Lane-Fox and his wife, Lady Charlotte, only daughter of the 6th Duke of Leeds. In 1846, he became a Cornet by purchase in the Royal Horse Guards and exchanged to the 13th Light Dragoons in 1849. In 1854, he became an Ensign in the 21st Regiment of Foot, a Lieutenant in the 87th Regiment of Foot in 1856, a Cornet in the West Riding Yeomanry in 1861 and a Lieutenant in the Royal East Kent Yeomanry in 1863.
In 1859, Lane-Fox had inherited the Portuguese countship of Mértola and the baronies of Darcy de Knayth and Conyers from his maternal uncle, the 7th Duke of Leeds. On 14 August 1860, Lord Conyers married Mary Curteis and they later had three children:
⁕The Hon. Sackville FitzRoy Henry
⁕The Hon. Marcia Amelia Mary, married Charles Pelham, 4th Earl of Yarborough.
⁕The Hon. Violet Ida Evelyn, married George Herbert, 4th Earl of Powis.
On Lord Conyers death in 1888, both baronies became abeyant between his two daughters, although his countship passed to his eldest daughter, Marcia. The barony of Conyers was later granted to Marcia in 1892, and the barony of Darcy de Knayth granted to his other daughter, Violet in 1903.
