Who is Stanley Hartt?

Stanley Herbert Hartt, OC QC is a Canadian lawyer, lecturer, businessman, and civil servant. He was Chief of Staff to Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney from 1989 to 1990.

Born in Montreal, Quebec, the son of Maurice Hartt, a Quebec MNA and MP, and brother of the late Joel Hartt, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1958, a Master of Arts degree in 1961, and a Bachelor of Civil Law degree in 1963 from McGill University. He was called to the Quebec Bar in 1965 and created a Queen's Counsel in 1984. In 1965, he joined Stikeman Elliott becoming a partner and remaining with the firm until 1990. From 1985 to 1988, he was the Deputy Minister in the Department of Finance, providing advice on economic and fiscal policy to Finance Minister Michael Wilson. From 1989 to 1990, he was the Chief of Staff in the Office of the Prime Minister.

Hartt is currently Counsel at Norton Rose Canada LLP, having previously served as Chairman of Macquarie Capital Markets Canada Ltd. and was profiled in Canadian Business Magazine as one of the Top 25 most influential business people in Canada.

From 1990 to 1996, he Chairman, President, and CEO of Camdev Corporation, a real estate corporation purchased in 1997 by Philip Reichmann. He later became Chairman of Salomon Smith Barney Canada and was Chairman of Citigroup Global Markets Canada until their departure from the Canadian market in 2008.
